Pictures: The Last Refuge of Hiaters

Without words, all I can do is look around me with open eyes and lens:

You ever dream of one of those endless corridors with doors that are choices?

Nah, me either.

  1. Why are the doormats piled like that, I wonder.  Groups of three, some upside down, all piles arranged the same?

  2. What does it say about me that when I look at this picture, I think of the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey?

  3. I do believe, Keith, that those are “decorative” carpet insets. (Scare quotes intentional; that corridor is scary.)

  4. You’re probably right, Kimberly, but they sure look like a pile of doormats to me.  But I’m sure some high-priced interior designer knows what they’re doing, and that if I’d read their masters thesis, I’d understand the soothing and inviting qualities of inset designs within extended, linear spaces.

Or is this one of those trick, Willy Wonka hallways?

  5. Kimberly’s correct about the “decorative” insets.  As is Keith about the general effect they produce - tho they’re not intentionally door-aligned.  I hate this carpet and hallway with a moderate antipathy.  It is muted perhaps by the experience of the last hallway/carpet I had where the new, designer-chosen stain-hiding carpet and different wall-different color scheme made me physically nauseated.

All that said, the main reason this picture exists is to play with the aperature setting on my new camera.  I read in the manual “big aperature # = deep depth of focus.” Given that the hallway is a couple hundred feet long an pretty much in focus end-to-end, it appears to be true.

More camera hijinx will certainly follow.
